About Me

Michael is a generalist rather than a specialist editor, an avid reader of both fiction and non-fiction, with professional experience editing academic writing, and writing and editing non-fiction.

Michael is an avid reader of classics from around the world. He enjoys work by Fitzgerald, Twain, Verne, Wells, Bradbury, Poe, Lovecraft, and recently finished Sir Richard F. Burton’s translation of The Arabian Nights. As a Canadian who loves local talent, though, Michael never denies his fondness for the work of Richler, Atwood, Mowat, Laurence, Ondaatje, Davies, and also his sister Erin Bedford.

Hooked at a young age, Michael is a comic book historian who has written on the Golden Age and Monster Age of comic books for the American pop-culture website Monkeys Fighting Robots.

Michael is also a playwright in residence with The Steady State Theatre Project, working diligently on his absurdist-style puppet comedy [play], and a semi-professional actor, having performed in both the Edmonton and Toronto Fringe Festivals, and Toronto’s Alumnae and Berkeley Street Upstairs Theatres. In 2017, Michael enjoyed playing the cunning and devious JACK MANNINGHAM in the Tipling Stage Company’s production of Gaslight. Most recently, Michael played the morally unimpeachable GERARDO ESCOBAR in Firehall Theatre‘s production of Ariel Dorfman’s Death and the Maiden.

Currently a member of Editors Hamilton-Halton, Michael previously served as secretary on Editors Toronto’s 2016–2017 executive committee.

Michael enjoys canoeing, camping, hiking, and skiing, though he doesn’t do any of them as much as he’d like. And, Michael has been playing the trumpet for the past twenty-one years, though he doesn’t practice as much as he should.
